Joachim von Schwarzkopf was one of the sons of the Hanoverian clerk and later bailiff Georg Heinrich Schwarzkopf . From 1783 to 1786 he studied law at the University of Göttingen . After completing his legal training, he entered the diplomatic service of Great Britain and the Electorate of Hanover associated with it . Most recently he represented the interests of the Electorate of Hanover at the Upper Rhine Reichskreis in the free imperial city of Frankfurt am Main as Minister Resident . He became known as a publicist with his work as a historian, especially in the field of newspaper and press history , to which he was inspired not least by the newspaper staff of his Göttingen teacher August Ludwig von Schlözer . With his publications he ushered in a new era in newspaper research. Joachim von Schwarzkopf had been a corresponding member of the Göttingen Society of Sciences since 1792 . Also in 1792 he was ennobled (imperial nobility).

In 1796 he married Anna Sophie Elisabeth, b. Bethmann-Metzler (1774–1806), who had previously been courted by King Friedrich Wilhelm II of Prussia for several years. She was the cousin of the Frankfurt banker Simon Moritz von Bethmann and the granddaughter of Johann Jakob Bethmann .
