Joan Cherono gained her first international experience at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Australian Gold Coast , where she was eliminated in the first round of the 200-meter run with 25.10 seconds. In August, she retired from the African Championships in Asaba with 12.20 seconds in the lead over 100 meters and won the bronze medal behind Nigeria and the Ivory Coast in 45.58 seconds with the Kenyan 4 x 100 meter relay. At the IAAF World Relays 2019 in Yokohama , she started with the 4 x 200 meter relay, but could not finish the run. At the end of August, at the African Games in Rabat , she won the bronze medal behind Nigeria and South Africa with the 4-by-100-meter relay in 45.44 s and finished with the 4-by-400-meter relay in 3: 32.93 min fourth place.
In 2018 Cherono became Kenyan champion in the 100-meter run.
