Joannes Wachtendonck (also Jean de Wachtendonck ; * February 1592 in Mechelen , † June 23, 1668 in Brussels ) was a Roman Catholic theologian and archbishop .

Life

Wachtendonk studied at the University of Leuven and obtained a licentiate in theology there in 1616 . He became headmaster of the seminary in Mechelen, also canon at the cathedral of Mechelen and ecclesiastical council at the great council of Mechelen . This was followed there by the appointment as chapter dean and general vicar as well as ecclesiastical council in the Brussels State Council .

Chosen in 1651, Wachtendonck was only appointed Bishop of Namur on October 2, 1654 , as he was suspected of adhering to Jansenism . His episcopal ordination took place on October 13 of the same year. In Namur he founded a seminary and reformed the clergy.

On June 2, 1567, Wachtendonck was chosen as Archbishop of Mechelen and confirmed as such on March 12, 1568. However, he no longer reached his bishopric. He died on the way there in Brussels.

The beatification of the martyrs of Gorkum , who were hanged in Brielle on July 9, 1572 , is said to have gone back to an advocate report by Wachtendonck to Pope Alexander VII .
