Alphonsus Ghislain Norbert de Berghes (also Alfons de Berghes ; born September 9, 1624 in Brussels ; † June 7, 1689 ibid) was a Roman Catholic theologian and bishop .

Family background

Berghes came from the noble family de Glymes from the line of Comtes de Grimberghe and Princes de Berghes. His great-uncle was the Prince Archbishop of Cambrai Guillaume de Berghes , his father the Spanish-Dutch Comte de Grimberghe, Comte Gottfried de Berghes, who served as court master and diplomat in the service of the Kingdom of Spain. His brother Eugen de Berghes († 1670) followed his father in 1635 to the position of Comte de Grimberghe, his brother Ignaz († 1690) became a Spanish general .

Life

Berghes was trained in the humanities with the Jesuits in Brussels and Halle . He then went to the University of Leuven , where he studied the arts and law . He was appointed provost of the Chapter of Cleves in 1646 and canon in Tournai in 1649 , having previously been ordained a deacon . On May 22, 1650 he was ordained a priest and in 1656 was first court chaplain at the court of the governor in Brussels Juan José de Austria , then in 1563 he was arch chaplain and grand almsman . As early as 1657 he had become provost of the chapter in Nivelles .

The Queen of Spain Elisabeth von Valois appointed Berghes Bishop of Tournai on July 2, 1667 . Due to political turmoil, his predecessor remained in office and he was not ordained a bishop. Two years later, on August 3, 1669, he was finally chosen as Archbishop of Mechelen . His episcopal ordination took place on January 25, 1671.

He was buried in the cathedral of Mechelen .
