Jochen Hein's work is divided into different groups of motifs: his landscapes show details of places in the collective visual memory, such as the sea, parks, grass and the sky in various lighting moods. In his depictions of man, only individual aspects are shown, such as the head and hands or hair of his portraits emerging from the darkness .

Jochen Hein uses experimental techniques in his painting style. By applying and removing liquid inks with various tools on differently plastic primers, he incorporates the natural process of plan and chance, analogous to evolution. In the complex works created in this way, Hein plays with the illusion , deception and disappointment that result from the divergence of the close and distant effects of his works: While they appear realistic from a distance, they dissolve into abstract ones when approaching Structures on. Much less than a realistic representation of the world, his work is about questions of perception and dealing with the meaning that we assign to the phenomena, the surface of the world. Hein himself said: “I want to show that we don't recognize what we see. But in the work of art our world only becomes true through the simultaneity of present and remembered sensations. "
