Jochen Steinmayr (born December 1, 1926 in Dingolfing ; † November 6, 2006 ) was a German journalist .

Life

Steinmayr attended the Reich School of the NSDAP Feldafing (RSF) during the Nazi era .

He first began studying medicine , which he dropped out. As an editor he went to the Süddeutsche Zeitung in Munich. From 1956 to 1961 he was a foreign correspondent in Warsaw and Moscow . He then became editor-in-chief of the Münchner Illustrierte within the Süddeutscher Verlag . In 1963 he took over the deputy editor-in-chief of the weekly magazine Stern in Hamburg. A little later he became editor-in-chief of the illustrated magazine Revue of the Bauer publishing group .

In 1971 the publisher Gerd Bucerius brought him into the same position at Gruner + Jahr in order to build up the newly founded Zeitmagazin . At the time, the editor-in-chief and later publisher of Die Zeit , Marion Gräfin Dönhoff , criticized the establishment , who saw the reputation of the weekly newspaper, which was geared towards educated citizens, at risk. At the end of the 1970s Steinmayr became editor-in-chief of this 'colorful' magazine. Under his management, it was considered the publishing house's “ cash cow ” and a role model for other publishers. During this time he was in close contact with the Austrian Chancellor Bruno Kreisky , whom he accompanied twice on election campaigns. In 1986, he interviewed and then- time boss Theo Sommer to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi . From 1989 he was still active as a columnist for Die Zeit .

Steinmayr was a member of the Roman Catholic Church and a cousin of the SPD politician Hans-Jochen Vogel . Steinmayr was of interest to the GDR because he knew the Chancellor's personal advisor and was therefore "looked after" by the GDR's secret diplomat, Hermann von Berg .
