Jochen Wegner

Jochen Wegner (born December 9, 1969 in Karlsruhe ) is a journalist and since March 15, 2013 editor-in-chief of the online presence of the Hamburg weekly newspaper Die Zeit . Since January 2019, Wegner has also been a member of the editorial team of Die Zeit .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1989 at the Melanchthon High School in Bretten , Wegner attended the Cologne School of Journalism from 1990 to 1992 . From 1992 he studied philosophy and physics at the University of Bonn and graduated in 1998 from the Bonn Clinic for Epileptology on the chaos theory of the human brain. From 1998 Wegner worked as a freelance journalist a. a. for Geo , Der Spiegel , WDR , Deutschlandfunk , Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and Die Tageszeitung .

He is the inventor and in 1994 one of the founders of the journalist network Jonet.org .

At the end of 1998 Wegner began as editor of “Research and Technology” at the news magazine Focus , and at the beginning of 2003 he became deputy head of department. In January 2006 he moved to Focus Online as editor-in-chief and at the same time became a member of the management team of TOMORROW FOCUS AG , of which he was a member of the management team from April 2009.

Wegner is considered to be one of the few Internet journalists in Germany with a long history, whose exit from Focus in November 2010 was interpreted as a sign of the decline in digital engagement at Hubert Burda Media .

Until the end of 2011 Wegner was managing director of mag10 Publishing GmbH together with Marco Börries in Berlin. The goal of the startup was to set up a platform for the creation, distribution and marketing of tablet media. The project was put on hold at the end of 2011.

As a freelance management consultant, Wegner developed digital strategies for publishers and companies in Berlin in 2012.

Wegner has been editor-in-chief of Zeit Online since March 15, 2013. Jochen Wegner has also been a member of the Zeit editor-in-chief since January 1, 2019.

In 2018, Jochen Wegner co-initiated the international platform "My Country Talks", which is used around the world to convey personal political dialogues. More than 100,000 people have already registered there, and more than a dozen national and international events in more than 30 countries have now taken place.

“My Country Talks” emerged from the Zeit online project “Germany speaks”, in which 12,000 people registered for the first time in 2017 to meet someone who has completely opposing political views. In 2018, “Germany speaks” took place for the second time, this time with eleven German media partners and 28,000 registered participants. The Federal President took over the patronage. The project received a Grimme Online Award.

In May 2019, before the European elections, “Europe talks” took place, in which 17,000 people across Europe took part and which was initiated by Zeit Online together with 17 European media partners such as the Financial Times or Helsingin Sanomat.

In June 2019, Jochen Wegners held a TED talk on “Europe talks” at the TED Summit in Edinburgh , which received more than one million views.

Jochen Wegner is, together with Christoph Amend , host of the “potentially infinite” podcast Everything said? . The conversation with a prominent guest lasts until he ends it himself. YouTuber Rezo holds the previous length record with 8 hours and 40 minutes. "Everything said?" is one of the most popular German podcasts and has been number 1 on the iTunes charts several times.

Jochen Wegner was  awarded first place for the Journalist of the Year award  in the category “Editor-in-Chief of the Year” by  Medium Magazin 2017  . In 2018 he and a team from Zeit Online received a Grimme Online Award for the project “Germany speaks”. Wegner was named “Digital Leader of the Year” at the LeadAward 2018. Wegner received the "Scoop Award 2018" from the innovation conference for online media scoopcamp.
