Joco Dev , initially Joco Dev Quartet , then Joco Dev Sextet , was a German rock band founded in autumn 1966 . She was one of the pioneers of GDR rock music . Initially based on western models, the band increasingly pursued its own musical concept and distinguished itself through demanding, danceable rock music. Compositions by the band such as Stapellauf and Wenn die Schwalben wiederkehren belong to the Ostrock classics. At the end of 1980, band leader Detlef Lübke broke up the band.
Surname
The name Joco Dev originated from the first names Jörg, Conny and Detlef of members of the Joco Dev Quartet.
history
In 1967 the band was expanded to include members of the group The Brightles, who no longer had a license to play. From then on it was called the Joco Dev Sextet and consisted of Jörg Schenkel (bass), band leader Detlef Lübke (flute, saxophone), Norbert Schmidt (vocals), Rainer Schubert (guitar), Peter Sitzer (drums) and Helmut Schulte (keyboard). The Joco Dev Sextet was one of the most famous beat bands in the GDR .
From 1969 the following titles were produced by Berliner Rundfunk :
- 1969: Hajji, the only thing left for me, why must it be, I saw you in a dream today, why can I walk through the streets dreaming and a mirage, which was also produced as a live recording
- 1970: Launched
- 1972/73: hot panties (later referred to as my one that I mean )
The titles quickly helped the band gain popularity. The band appeared several times on the television program The Central Bank . Some of the original compositions were published in 1969 on sound foil (Flexidisk) . When the band changed for the first time in 1970/71, Peter Nehls (guitar) and keyboard player Detlef Jörg Schmidt, known as "Ofen", joined the band. In the next few years the Joco Dev Sextet developed into one of the most successful rock bands in East Germany. In 1971 Amiga released the band's first single. It contained the title Launched, which had been included in a new version, which contained an explanatory text as a supplement. Other titles such as We lay in the grass were released on record.
In 1973 the GDR customs confiscated part of the band's equipment because it had allegedly been illegally obtained from the West. A report had previously appeared in the West German magazine Stern , in which the western origin of the equipment had been pointed out. Several members were arrested and fined heavily; Peter Nehls did not come back to the band after his arrest and was replaced by Gerdi Wagner. There were numerous other line-up changes. The development of the band stagnated, also because the band had to give a lot of concerts in order to be able to pay the fines and they could no longer produce any new titles. After 1973, next to guitarist Gerdi Wagner, Christian Pittius (keyboard), then Frank Gursch (keyboard), Wolfgang Fuchs (drums), then Jürgen Burand (drums) and Harry Wittkowski (keyboard), Ralf-Egbert Römke (guitar), Peter Paule Fincke (drums) - 1979 for Jörg Schenkel - Robert Hanke (bass) and Wolfgang Densky (guitar). Harry Wittkowski went to Babylon . Joco Dev was dissolved in late 1980.
On 1 January 1981 founded Fincke, Densky and Schmidt then the heavy metal band formula I . From then on, Schenkel and Lüpke appeared as a Duo Gag .
reception
According to the music journalist Jürgen Balitzki, the launch recorded in March 1970 is the first rock song ever sung in German. The title stayed at number 1 on the DT64 hit parade for a long time in 1970 .
“When the lights went out on March 3, 1970 in the studio 'Saal IV' of the Ostberliner Rundfunk, one of the most evocative songs of early GDR rock was born. 'Launched' - there is something prophetic about this title. "
