Joe Hamman (or Joë Hamman , real name Jean Paul Arthur Hamman ; born October 26, 1883 in Paris , † June 30, 1974 in Dieppe ) was a French actor , director and illustrator .

Life

The son of the Belgian painter Edouard Jean Conrad Hamman came into contact early on with friends of his father who were active as writers or painters. He studied drawing at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris in Paris and in London .

Even in his youth, Hamman had worked as a screening assistant for films by the Lumière brothers . After a stay in the USA , during which he stayed in Montana for some time and got to know Buffalo Bill , he made numerous short western films in his homeland from 1906 to 1914 , mostly under , encouraged by the writer Folco de Baroncelli-Javon from the Camargue directed by his friend Jean Durand . After working as a book illustrator for a while (and again and again later) , he returned to the cinema in 1922 ; initially with some serial ; later as a character actor. As early as 1921, Hamman had founded Les films Joë Hamman as a production company , and "Films Hamman" after the Second World War .

His autobiography , published in 1962, is entitled Du Far-West à Montmartre .
