Mountains in Flames is a German film by Karl Hartl and Luis Trenker from 1931, based on Trenker's novel of the same name from the same year. In this war and home history , Trenker processed personal experiences from the First World War when he was fighting on the Alpine front . The French version , filmed at the same time, is entitled Les monts en flammes .

action

Count Arthur Franchini from an old Roman noble family and the mountain guide Florian Dimai from the time the Austro-Hungarian Empire belonging Dolomitenort Cortina d'Ampezzo have been friends for years. On August 1, 1914, they climb the Col Alto ( Great Lagazuoi ) together and are surprised by the general mobilization at the beginning of the First World War. Dimai first came to Galicia , but after Italy entered the war, he was transferred to the Dolomite front on the summit of Col Alto. From there it is not far to his home village, but the front line makes it inaccessible to him. His friend Franchini is also in the Col Alto section. His job is to storm the summit and chase the Austrians away.

The Italian government decides to drive a tunnel into the mountain and from there to blow up the summit. Dimai is sent by the Austrians to find out the day of the demolition. He succeeds in bypassing the Italian positions and getting through to his family. His wife Pia greets him overjoyed. Through a soldier who has been billeted in his house, he learns that the demolition is planned for that night. At the very last minute he can warn his comrades who are repulsing the attack.

On August 10, 1931, Dimai and Franchini climbed the mountain together again, on which the remains of the war can still be seen.

background

Together with Karl Hartl, Trenker staged the material that was eminently important to him and composed himself, and also played the main role of the mountain guide Florian. The film was partly shot in the Kalkkögeln southwest of Innsbruck and on the Nordkette.

The idea for the story came to Luis Trenker when he climbed to the summit of the Col Alto again after the war and saw how nature and spring recaptured everything that humans had destroyed. “If people only knew how it was, back in winter, in the battle for the summit. If people only knew what it was like to have to face a mountain friend ”. (Luis Trenker).

At the same time he shot a French version of the film under the title Les monts en flammes and French actors. The role of Pia was taken on by Marie-Antoinette Buzet , Lieutenant Franchini George Péclet , Lieutenant Call Joe Hamman and the commanding officer was played by Henri Valbel . In addition, Willy Rozier and André Saint-Germain played in this version .

The film architect was Leopold Blonder .

Battleground

The section of the front that Trenker describes in his novel Mountains in Flames does not refer to the Col di Lana , as wrongly assumed , but to the area around the Schreckenstein (Castelletto). It can be concluded that Trenker was deployed as a mountain guide in the Travenanzes section of the battle after being wounded. In addition, the blasting of the Col di Lana is mentioned separately in the novel, as well as the fact that the crew of the Dread Stone 1) witnessed the blast and 2) were then provided with all available information about the blasting of the Col di Lana.
