content

The Zurich designer Mario Clar is accused of being to blame for the collapse of a bridge he had built, in which 43 people were killed. Although he is from the detention dismissed, but may not leave the country. He makes serious accusations and wants to take his own life. The main comfort for him is that his daughter Nina, who lives with his ex-wife Fioretta and her new husband Leo Seduc, will be covered by his life insurance. Mario drives to Zermatt , from where he sends a farewell letter to Fioretta. Then he goes on a mountain tour alone and unsecured, but turns back when, through his fault, falling rock injures the shepherd Tino. He takes Tino to the doctor Gassard's house and then collapses. Gassard and his daughter Angela prepare a room for him in their house.

Meanwhile, after receiving the farewell letter, Fioretta and Leo have come to Zermatt to stop Mario from doing what he is doing. You learn that he is alive. Leo, who is Mario's partner as a material supplier, is reminded of outstanding funds by a business partner. When he learns that Mario's life insurance amounts to 50,000 Swiss francs , he persuades the suicidal Mario to come up with a deal that can ultimately save the joint company that is about to go bankrupt. Mario increases his life insurance to 750,000 francs and, on Leo's advice, pretends to want to travel to South America . Leo sets the fictitious departure date for a date in two weeks and procures ship tickets. During this time, Mario is supposed to undertake several tours with experienced mountain guides in the Zermatt mountains so that he can set off on his own in two weeks at the latest - then he could take his own life without it looking like suicide. Mario goes into the "business", also to enable Nina to live a carefree life.

The days go by and Mario and Angela become friends. The joy of life reawakens in Mario, but a letter from Leo finally reminds him that he has to commit suicide the next day. Angela suspects something and follows Mario, who rushes out of the night, to the Breithorn, where she continues to climb with him. Before that, she had found his will in his room. She reveals to him that she loves him and can thus prevent him from suicide. On the descent, both of them get caught in a heavy thunderstorm, but can escape to a mountain hut. Both are now a couple, much to the displeasure of mountain guide Beni, who loves Angela, and Leo, who needs the money from the life insurance. He goes to Zermatt to remind Mario of the fulfillment of the agreement.

Meanwhile, Mario's confidante Hermann Egli, who believes in his innocence, has started to investigate on his own. He finds out that it was not a design flaw that caused the bridge to collapse, but poor quality material. Leo bought that in turn for a low price and kept the surplus for himself. So it is not Mario who is to blame for the collapse of the bridge, but Leo. When the judge learns that both Mario and Leo are in Zermatt, he lets the police look for both of them there.

When Mario learns from Leo that the police are looking for him, he fears that he will be arrested again. Angela convinces him to let Beni take him across the Alps to Italy to start a new life there. Beni, in turn, is supposed to claim that Mario broke free from the fuse at some point and then had an accident. On the way over the mountains Beni and Mario have an argument about Angela, among other things, as a result of which Beni pushes Mario and he falls into the depths. Angela's plan has now come true and Mario is believed dead. When Leo tries to pass this on to life insurance, he is arrested. The mountaineers, including their chairman Peter Zurwalden, set out the next morning to rescue the injured Mario. They find Mario injured but alive and take him to the valley. Mario forgives Beni and he and Angela are now finally a couple, especially since Mario is officially rehabilitated.
