Life

He studied philosophy, art history and sociology in Cologne , Heidelberg and Berlin. During his doctoral thesis on European nihilism , he first came to the theater as an extra in Cologne.

After graduating, he began acting in 1924 at the Schauspielhaus Cologne . In 1925 he played in Hagen and in 1926 at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin. He has been missing since a voyage. Heinz Hilpert had him searched, and when Speelmans reappeared in Marseille , he engaged him in 1928 at the Renaissance theater . In 1930/31 he worked in the stands , later also in the comedy.

After a few minor appearances, Speelmans received his first major film role in 1931 in The Man Who Seeks His Murderer . He was then often used in the productions during the German Reich from 1933 to 1945 as a "whole guy" and good buddy in the film, sometimes as a crook, but often as a friend of the real hero, such as Christian Kuchenreutter in Münchhausen in 1942 .

At the end of the war in 1945 he founded his own traveling theater, the “Werkstatt”, and traveled with it through the province for three years. After that, he reappeared in several films, but also suffered from alcohol problems. Shortly after signing a contract with DEFA , he collapsed on the street and died shortly afterwards. He was buried in the forest cemetery in Zehlendorf , but his grave has since been closed.
