action

Harry Steinschneider appears under the stage name Erik Jan Hanussen in various variety shows as a clairvoyant. He is arrested during a performance because of several fraud charges against him. The criminal trial in 1931 ended with an acquittal, as he was able to demonstrate his supernatural abilities in court. Among the spectators in the courtroom is the student Hilde Graf, who doubts his gift; Nevertheless, Hanussen falls in love with the educated woman. Hanussen's long-time partner Prisca takes her own life because he refuses to marry and repeatedly turns out to be a womanizer.

During an engagement in Berlin, he made contact with National Socialists, whose seizure of power he predicted, and openly showed his sympathy. Hilde is horrified and cannot imagine a relationship under these circumstances. However, at the peak of his success, she returns to him. With his appearances he has brought it to reputation and prosperity. Among other things, Hilde witnesses how he predicts the Reichstag fire at a private party .

The happiness in love is disturbed when suddenly there are numerous criminal charges against Hilde. Since she is the author of a book critical of the regime, she faces imprisonment. Hanussen itself is now a target of the law enforcement authorities. His accurate predictions are viewed by the leadership as a danger or treason. Hanussen and Hilde are about to be executed. He still organizes Hilde's escape abroad, hastily draws up his will, then he bravely faces his fate. A few hours later, he was arrested by the police for statements threatening the state and executed at dawn without trial. His former manager Mirko, now a police officer, initiated the action. Hanussen once flirted unabashedly with Mirko's partner Grace, who was an ardent admirer of the trick artist.

Awards

The FBL awarded Hanussen the title valuable.

criticism

“The film condenses the events into a politically and socially critical drama, describes Hanussen's life as a fateful event and himself as a tragic figure, which detracts from historical truth, but not from tension. All in all quite impressive, especially in the first third very intensely staged. "
