occupation

Life lies ahead of us is a German contemporary drama from 1948 by the cameraman Günther Rittau , whose last film director this was. The main role is played by Hermann Speelmans .

action

Captain Harms was once able to pursue the important and life-saving profession on board a sea rescue deep-sea tug before an Allied bombing raid sank his cutter to the bottom of the harbor basin. The old man cannot come to terms with being stuck on land, since the Allies have now forbidden the Germans to go on the high seas. Nevertheless, Harms leaves no stone unturned in lifting his sunken boat again - in vain. The old fur seal gets more and more frustrated and gradually falls into alcohol.

In order to be at least useful for something, Harms agrees to go on night smuggling trips with a cutter. He only rethought when Captain Harms' little son Peter was in great danger in the Wadden Sea and threatened to drown. Renate Harms, Peter's mother, then takes the initiative and tries to rescue her depressed husband's deep-sea tug on her own. The passionate sailor can finally go out to sea again and pursue his passion. The economic existence seems just as secure as the cohesion of the family.

criticism

“Due to the production-related deficits, the staging is rather simple, but the film has a quite remarkable naturalistic atmosphere. The topics are typical of the first post-war years: hunger, barter deals, lack of everything and everyone, but ultimately hope and reconstruction. "
