Life

Born in Hamburg, Joe Luga grew up in Berlin and trained as a bookseller. He learned his artistic craft from, among others, Blandine Ebinger and Fritzi Massary . In 1940 Luga was drafted into the Wehrmacht and in 1942 came to the Braune Bären front theater , where he appeared in front of soldiers as "Inge, the lady on duty" . After the Second World War, he first worked in Berlin, supported by the cabaret artist and composer Rudolf Nelson , and worked there with well-known artists such as Brigitte Mira and Helen Vita . He later performed on stage in Cuxhaven before opening the Joe-Luga Bar in Mannheim in 1951 . Despite his homosexuality, for which he was imprisoned twice during the Adenauer era , Luga was married to the singer Valerie Antelmann for four years. In 1962 he returned to Hamburg. Luga was known for his interpretations of chansons by Friedrich Hollaenders and Rudolf Nelsons, with the Hollaender chanson Ich bin das Nachtgespenst being particularly popular with the audience.

Joe Luga rarely appeared in front of the camera, for example in the series Two Heavenly Daughters with Iris Berben and Ingrid Steeger in the title roles. After his death he appeared in the documentary Rosa von Praunheims Tote Schwule - Lebende Lesben .

Joe Luga published his autobiography in 2000 under the title “This is how I am: Confessions of Inge and Joe” . He died at the age of 82 in the St. Georg Hospital in Hamburg .
