Joe Turkel
Joseph "Joe" Turkel (born July 15, 1927 in Brooklyn , New York City ) is an American actor .
Life
Joe Turkel, who was born in Brooklyn as the son of Jewish immigrants from Poland, served as a sailor in the United States Navy during World War II and, according to his own admission, was present at the liberation of concentration camps at the age of 17. Turkel began his career in 1949 with an uncredited minor supporting role in the crime film The Brood of Satan . In the 1950s and 1960s he had numerous film roles; in many cases these were so subordinate that his name was often not mentioned in the credits. He has appeared in films by William Wyler , Robert Wise and Lewis Milestone .
In the 1950s, Turkel was used by Stanley Kubrick as a supporting actor in his early works The Bill Did Not Work and Roads to Fame . In Paths to Glory he played one of the three soldiers who, as a warning to the other soldiers, are randomly selected and executed; Turkel later described this film as his favorite film. Kubrick and Turkel were friends, also because both were about the same age, were born in Brooklyn, and were similarly socialized. His third and final collaboration was the role of the bartender Lloyd in Shining , who appears as a ghost to the increasingly insane Jack Nicholson and gives him drinks.
In 1982, Turkel impersonated Scott's Blade Runner in Ridley as eccentric CEO Dr. Eldon Tyrell one of his most famous film roles. In 1990, he was in science fiction - horror film The Dark Side of the Moon can be seen in one of the main roles. In addition to film work, Turkel has also appeared as a guest star in many television series since the 1950s , including Bonanza , Der Chef , Kojak - Einsatz in Manhattan and Miami Vice . He last stood in front of the camera in 1998 for the television series Life and Me .
