Johan Bouman

Johan Bouman (born March 1, 1918 in Amsterdam , † October 7, 1998 in Pforzheim ) was a Dutch Protestant theologian .

Life

Johan Bouman was born on March 1, 1918 in Amsterdam. He was the only son of the Chief Police Officer Jan Willem and his wife Maria. After his mother died, he was raised by his grandparents. He began an apprenticeship in banking and was taught at the grammar school in Amsterdam, before moving to the University of Amsterdam in 1936 . After the Netherlands was occupied by the National Socialists , Bouman took part in the Amsterdam February strike , for which he was imprisoned for three months.

After he was released, he continued his studies at the University of Leiden and married the German physiotherapist Magda Röder, who gave birth to his daughter Anna Elisabeth Henriette in 1947. Soon after we sat Bouman as pastor in Hekelingen one, in 1954 he became the doctor doctorate and a full professor at the University of Brussels for theology, Old Testament and Hebrew language appointed.

In 1959 he submitted a dissertation to the University of Utrecht . In that year he also resigned from the editorial staff of the faculty magazine Veritatem in Caritate ; in this office he had been active since 1955. In the following year he became professor of Islamic studies at the Near East School of Theology in Beirut . He taught theology at the University of Bochum since December 1969 and moved to the University of Marburg four years later . At this he remained active until 1986; then he retired .

After Bouman's first wife died, he married Irmgard Ruth Schroth from Pforzheim. In November 1994 they moved to Pforzheim. Bouman participated in conversations with Jews and Muslims and belonged to scientific societies, including the International Working Group for Theological Bach Research , the Society for Mission Studies and the American Foundation for the Study of Man . He then died in Pforzheim on October 7, 1998 at the age of 80.
