Johan Jakob Tikkanen (born December 7, 1857 in Helsinki ; † June 20, 1930 ibid) was a Finnish art historian .

Life

Johann Jakob Tikkanen was the son of Paul Tikkanan (1823–1873) and Helena Maria Tengström (1829–1875). His father was a nationalist journalist and co-founder of the newspaper Suometar and a writer, his maternal grandfather was the university professor of philosophy Johann Jakob Tengström (1787-1858), his younger sister Johanna (1856-1936), later married Schybergson, was an inventor. After the early death of his parents, he lived with his mother's relatives, in whose household Swedish, the language of the educated class in Finland at the time, was spoken. First at Botany interested, he turned by the influence of Nordisten and art historian Carl Gustaf Estlander of art history to.

He received his master's degree in art history in 1880, and the Berlin-based art history professor Eduard Dobbert advised him at the beginning of his career. Tikkanen studied art history in Germany from 1880 at the Munich Art Academy under Moritz Carrière and the art of drawing. He received his doctorate in 1884 from the University of Helsinki with a dissertation on Giotto and developed into a connoisseur of the Italian Renaissance and medieval manuscripts. In the same year he was appointed lecturer (associate professor) for aesthetics and art history at the University of Helsinki , where he gave lectures exclusively in Swedish, from 1907 he also taught in Finnish. Until 1905 he also gave drawing lessons at the private girls' school in Helsinki.

From 1885 to 1889 he made several trips to Europe, from which he brought notes and drawings. He made important art-historical discoveries, such as in 1889 the connection between the mosaics in the vestibule of San Marco in Venice and the illustrations of the Cotton Genesis , a Greek manuscript from the 5th century. In the Vatican Library he discovered an illustrated manuscript of Johannes Klimakos (Codex Vaticanus Graecus 1754), which he published in 1893.

In 1920 he became the first holder of the chair for art history in Finland, named after Hjalmar Linder, and in 1926 he retired . His better-known students include Tancred Borenius , Onni Okkonen and Osvald Sirén .
