Johan Everhard Meijer Ranneft (born  January 25, 1886 in Semarang on Java ; †  January 20, 1982 in Houston , Texas ) was a Rear Admiral ( Dutch Schout-bij-Nacht ) of the Koninklijke Navy ( German "Royal Navy" ) during World War II , the naval forces of the Kingdom of the Netherlands .  

Life

Born on the island of Java, which formerly belonged to the Dutch colonial empire in the East Indies , Ranneft had a steep career in the Dutch navy. On September 16, 1909, he was promoted to lieutenant at sea . This was followed on March 6, 1919, the promotion to Korvettenkapitän , on September 1, 1929 to frigate captain , on August 1, 1933 to sea captain and finally on January 16, 1942 to rear admiral . From April 1, 1938, he was a military attaché in the American capital Washington, DC , and thus the first Dutch officer in this capacity at all.

During the Second World War he served as a liaison officer between the US Navy and the Royal Netherlands Navy. Among other things, he was responsible for the procurement of 40 mm Bofors guns . Even after the war he continued in this position. On June 1, 1947, he retired as a military attaché and five months later, on November 1, 1947, retired.

Admiral Johan Everhard Meijer Ranneft died in the United States at the age of 95.

Honors

The order of a Commander of the Legion of Merit is, besides the Medal of Honor, the only military order in the United States that is worn as a neck medal .

Ranneft was the recipient of a large number of Dutch and international orders and decorations . These include the Order of the Dutch Lion , the Order of Orange-Nassau , the Order of the Black Star (France) , the Order of the Crown of Italy and the Russian Order of Saint Anne . On August 21, 1946 he received the American Legion of Merit (picture) in the second highest rank of commander from the hand of Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz .
