Johann Adolf of Anhalt-Zerbst

Johann Adolf von Anhalt-Zerbst (* December 2, 1654 in Zerbst ; † March 19, 1726 ibid) from the Ascanian family was a Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst , military and hymn writer.

Life

Johann Adolf was the fifth son of Prince Johann von Anhalt-Zerbst (1621–1667) from his marriage to Sophie Auguste (1630–1680), daughter of Duke Friedrich III. from Holstein-Gottorp . After his father's death he was under the tutelage of his mother, Landgrave Ludwig VI. von Hessen-Darmstadt and Prince Johann Georg II. von Anhalt-Dessau .

After completing his cavalier tour , he entered the Brunswick-Lüneburg military service in 1674 and took part in the meeting of Ensisheim against Marshal Turenne . Afterwards Johann Adolf was in Dutch, Danish and Brandenburg services. In 1684 he joined Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm von Baden on his Turkish campaign. When the war against France broke out again, Johann Adolf fought in the Battle of Walcourt . In the battle of Steenkerke in 1692 he led the vanguard of the Duke of Württemberg .

In 1676 he concluded a house contract with his brothers, whereby the right of birthright was introduced in the country and Johann Adolf was guaranteed an annual allowance. In 1712 he took part in the imperial coronation of Charles VI. and was awarded the Hubertus Order on this occasion . Johann Adolf traveled a lot and dealt with theological questions. He created several hymns that were recorded in the Zerbster hymn book. After the death of Prince Viktor Amadeus von Anhalt-Bernburg , Johann Adolf made claims to the senior office of the Anhalt family, but this was rejected by the Reichshofrat in 1722 after years of disputes .

Under the company name Der Starkriechende he was accepted as a member of the literary fruitful society .

Johann Adolf died unmarried and childless. In the last years of his life he had rendered services to churches and the poor. He was buried in the Bartholomaikirche in Zerbst.
