Viktor I. Amadeus von Anhalt-Bernburg (* 6. October 1634 in Harzgerode ; † 14. February 1718 in Bernburg ) was since 1656 the reigning Prince of Anhalt-Bernburg from the House of Ascania .

Life

Viktor Amadeus was a son of Prince Christian II of Anhalt-Bernburg (1599–1656) from his marriage to Eleonore Sophie (1603–1675), daughter of Duke Johann of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg . Among other things, Duke Viktor Amadeus I of Savoy acted as godfather of the prince . The prince grew up in Leiden under the supervision of the theologian Friedrich Spanheim . After the death of his older brother Erdmann Gideon in 1649, Viktor Amadeus became hereditary prince, accompanied his father on trips and carried out diplomatic missions at foreign courts.

In 1656 Viktor I Amadeus succeeded his father in the government and tried to rebuild the country , which had been badly damaged after the Thirty Years' War, through reforms in the police and legal system. Together with the other Anhalt princes, he initiated a renewed state, process and servant order for Anhalt in 1666 . Viktor Amadeus rearranged the financial system and gained territorial gains after the Anhalt-Bernburg-Harzgerode line died out in 1709. Despite the introduction of the Primogenitur in 1677, in 1709 he left the office of Hoym with Zeitz and Belleben to his younger son without sovereignty.

Under the company name of the famous, he was accepted as a member of the Fruit-Bringing Society .

In the last years of his life the prince was blind and found himself in bitter arguments with his eldest son, who had married improperly. He died as a senior in the Anhalt family and was buried in the Bernburg Castle Church.
