Johann Andreas Karl Hildebrandt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Andreas Karl (Christoph) Hildebrandt (born April 13, 1763 in Halberstadt , † November 25, 1846 in Eilsdorf in Saxony ) was a German novelist.

Life

Hildebrandt was initially a collaborator at the Martinsschule in Halberstadt, from 1794 second preacher in Weferlingen and then until his death preacher in Eilsdorf. His son Friedrich Wilhelm Hildebrandt (1811-1893) also took up the profession of preacher. He was one of the prolific writers . Dozens of novels, some of them historical, as well as numerous knight and horror stories arose from his fertile imagination . The necrology notes from him that “during his long life he made the Basse bookstore in Quedlinburg its notoriety almost entirely by himself” . The bookstore mentioned is the publishing house founded by Gottfried Basse , in which most of Hildebrandt's works were published.

reception

In Wilhelm Hauff's satirical sketch "The Books and the Reading World", a servant for his rule, a countess with a penchant for horror novels, is looking for reading material in the lending library:

"Ghost story?" Asked the little librarian, looking around, "can it also be a knight's story? The spirits are all borrowed. "
“Yes, just something really gruesome, she likes that,” replied the servant, “like the last time, the black ruins or the underground prison; We liked that very much. "
"Is he reading too?" Asked the little man with astonishment.
"Afterwards, when the Countess has finished a volume, we'll read it in the serving room."
"Well; Does he prefer the ghost castle, the resurrection in the vault of death, or Hildebrandt's fiery sword of vengeance? "" So the choice hurts me, "he replied; »What kind of beautiful books they must be! Nu - this time I will take the fiery sword of vengeance; keep the ghost lock for me next time. "

Two of the three titles mentioned are novels by Hildebrandt (namely “The black ruins or the underground prisons of the Barbara Eremita Monastery” and “The Helfenstein Castle or the fiery sword of revenge”; “The ghost castle or the resurrection in the death vault” is a work of his namesake Theodor Hildebrandt). For Hauff, Hildebrandt was the typical representative of the horror novel writer of his time.
