Johann Christian Peter Arckenhausen (born September 3, 1784 in Goslar ; † April 28, 1855 there ) was a German drawing teacher, draftsman and illustrator of botanical and zoological works.

Life

Johann Arckenhausen was born in Goslar in 1784 as the son of a master shoemaker. He probably received training as a writer and draftsman in order to earn his living as a drawing teacher in Goslar and as a specialist book illustrator. He was a founding member of the Goslar Natural Science Association , which was founded on October 23, 1852 and which took over a large part of his scientific and artistic legacy. Arckenhausen created a herbarium as well as a collection of insects and butterflies as the basis for his illustrations .

Arckenhausen created the color images (panels 43b – 139) for the work written by Friedrich L. Krebs Complete description and illustration of all types of wood that grow wild in central and northern Germany , which was published in two volumes in 1826/1832 by the Braunschweig Vieweg Verlag . To do this, he lithographed his colored drawings himself. The botanist Carl Ludwig Blume from Braunschweig won over Arckenhausen to work on the picture section of his botanical publications on Java and East India . For this work Arckenhausen traveled to Leiden and Brussels .

His depictions of plants “are characterized by great clarity and conciseness. They appear aesthetically successful and harmoniously in terms of color. ”His Goslar city views of the cathedral , Klaus- and Rosentor lag behind in terms of quality.

Arckenhausen died in April 1855 at the age of 70 in Goslar.
