Johann August Apel (born September 17, 1771 in Leipzig ; † August 9, 1816 there ) was a German lawyer and writer .

Life

August Apel was born as the youngest son of the lawyer and Mayor of Leipzig Heinrich Friedrich Innocentius Apel . After graduating from the St. Thomas School at Leipzig , he studied from 1789 to 1793 law at the University of Leipzig and the Leucorea in Wittenberg and graduated in 1795 with a doctorate Dr. jur. from. In Leipzig he then established himself as a lawyer ; In 1801 he was elected to the city council.

At first he wrote classicist dramas , later more and more horror and ghost stories . Apel became known with his ghost book , which he edited together with Friedrich Laun . His school friend Friedrich Kind took Apel's novella Der Freischütz from the ghost book the material for large parts of the libretto of the opera Der Freischütz by Carl Maria von Weber .

The publication of Apels Metrik sparked an escalating scientific dispute. His main opponent was his former teacher Gottfried Hermann . But before the dispute was resolved, August Apel died on August 9, 1816 in Leipzig.

The writer and founder Theodor Apel is the son of August Apel.
