Johann August Mau

Johann August Mau (born May 1, 1777 in Altenkrempe ; † June 13, 1861 ) was a German Lutheran clergyman and a Holstein politician.

Life

Mau studied theology at the Universities of Kiel and Jena and was appointed pastor in Hollingstedt (Treene) in 1804 . In 1808 he moved to Probsteierhagen ; In 1821 he became senior pastor at Schönberg in Ostholstein and remained so until his death. There is still an oil painting depicting Mau in the church there.

In 1838 he became a member of the Holstein Assembly as a member of the clergy and assessor of the state consistory in Kiel .

His work was awarded a Dr. theol. hc and honored by the Danish King - as Duke of Holstein - with the Dannebrogden .

Mau had been married to Marie Luise Carstens since 1804 , with whom he had 14 children, including Heinrich August Mau, professor of theology and (twice) rector of Kiel University . The archaeologist August Mau , the sociologist Ferdinand Tönnies , the politician Gert Tönnies and the lawyer Karl Jeß are grandsons of Johann August Mau; the philosopher Max Wundt , the biochemist Gerrit Tönnies , the engineer Jan Friedrich Tönnies , the orthopedist Carl Mau , the philologist Jürgen Mau and the ophthalmologist Adolf Jess great-grandson; the resister Harro Schulze-Boysen , the diplomat Hartmut Schulze-Boysen , the political scientist Klaus Hinrich Heberle , the physicist Jan Peter Toennies , the theologian Carl H. Mau , the orthopedist Hans Mau and the publicist Sibylle Tönnie's great-great-grandson.
