Johann August Richter (* around 1695 ; † after 1743 ) from Oschatz was a German cartographer and draftsman .

Life

Richter entered the service of the geographer and land and border commissioner Adam Friedrich Zürner in 1721 and was involved with him as a conductor in the second Saxon land survey until 1743.

In addition to numerous maps, from 1722 together with the conductor Christian Rosenlecher, he produced views of the area and traditional costumes for the recording of the state of the Electorate of Saxony .

Hand-colored copies of the traditional costumes are used today by the Institute for Saxon History and Folklore (ISGV) at the Technical University of Dresden . Occasionally these are also available in regional museums, such as in Plauen and Grimma . There are numerous cityscapes u. a. in the Leipzig City Library . Richter's original sketchbook, however, is archived in the State Office for Monument Preservation Saxony in Dresden .
