Johann Baptist Büchel the Elder

Johann Baptist Büchel the Elder (* July 15 / July 16, 1824 in Balzers ; † January 10, 1907 in Vaduz ) was a Roman Catholic priest, canon and member of the Liechtenstein state parliament.

biography

Büchel was a citizen of the municipality of Balzers and came from the village part of Mäls . He was the son of Leonz Büchel and his wife Anna Maria Frick. He attended the boys' seminar in Chur and from 1844 the grammar school in Feldkirch . He then studied philosophy at the University of Innsbruck and theology at the St. Luzi seminary in Chur. After his ordination he taught Latin from 1852 to 1854 at the Episcopal School at the Disentis Abbey . In the period that followed, Büchel returned to Liechtenstein, where he worked temporarily as a pastor. From 1854 to 1856 he was an assistant priest in Balzers and from 1856 to 1857 he was an early knife in Triesen . After his appointment to the canton of Graubünden , he worked there from 1857 to 1859 as prefect at the episcopal boys' seminar in Chur. Due to his deteriorating health, he returned to Liechtenstein in 1859 and devoted himself again to pastoral care. From 1859 to 1862 he was court chaplain in Schaan . Büchel finally held a position as pastor from 1862 to 1883 in Triesenberg , and from 1883 to 1900 in Vaduz . In 1883 he was appointed canon . In 1900 he retired.

From 1859 to 1862 and again from 1881 to 1891 he was school inspector, an office that was created in 1859 with the new school law and replaced the office of senior school inspectorate. Furthermore, Büchel was a member of the state parliament from 1862 to 1869 and again from 1883 to 1886, when he was appointed by Prince Johann II to replace Josef Erni , who died on December 11, 1882 and whom he also replaced as pastor of Vaduz of the Principality of Liechtenstein . During this time he held the office of Vice President of the State Parliament from 1885 to 1886.

The son of his sister Katharina, Johann Baptist Büchel , also embarked on a career as a clergyman and member of the state parliament.
