Johann Baptist Prechtl (born February 13, 1813 in Lauterhofen ; † May 20, 1904 there ) was an Upper Palatinate priest and author.

Life

Prechtl was born in Lauterhofen in 1813 as the son of a grain trader. After graduating from high school in Amberg , he traveled to his brother Michael in Nagybánya in Hungary, studied in Pest and Klausenburg ( Transylvania ) and was ordained a priest in Eichstätt on August 12, 1838 on his return . After that he was assistant priest in Heideck , Greding , Böhmfeld and Raitenbuch . At the beginning of 1841 he moved to the Archdiocese of Munich-Freising , became a chaplain in the Bürgersaal in Munich , then provisional beneficiary in Pasing and then parish vicar in Massenhausen . In 1844 he was a school deficit in Grainau , in 1852 pastor in Unterammergau and from 1858 to 1874 pastor in Reichertshausen near Freising . At the age of 61 he left the pastoral service at his own request and moved to Freising.

Right from the start of his priesthood, Prechtl was concerned with the history of his hometown Lauterhofen and the parishes he looked after. For his historical treatise on the Passion Play in Oberammergau, he received his doctorate in philosophy from the University of Erlangen on March 2, 1858 . On May 10, 1882 he was appointed royal clergyman by King Ludwig II .

He bequeathed most of his historical library to the Karlshof monastery, where he spent the last years of his life and died on May 20, 1904.
