Johann Baptist von Hofstetten

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Baptist von Hofstetten (* July 12, 1847 , † January 15, 1887 in Berlin ) was an early promoter of the German socialist workers' movement .

Life

He came from a southern German aristocratic family and served as an officer in the Bavarian army. At times he was even planned to accompany the later King Ludwig II during his studies. He gave up this position to live as a writer and journalist. He moved to Berlin and married a Countess Strachwitz, who brought a certain fortune into the marriage. He frequented the upper classes of Berlin society.

He became a supporter of Ferdinand Lassalle and joined the General German Workers' Association (ADAV). Also for Countess Hatzfeld was the godmother for a daughter Hofstettens consisted relationships. At the request of Lassalle, he came to his fatal duel with Rakowitza in Geneva and acted as a referee. In his will, Lassalle Hofstetten bequeathed his weapons collection, among other things.

Together with Johann Baptist von Schweitzer , in 1864 he founded the newspaper “ Der Social-Demokratie ”, the central organ of the ADAV. Both together were owners and editors of the paper. The newspaper was not viable simply because of its relatively small number of subscribers and von Hofstetten ensured the newspaper's survival through his own fortune. This was used up by 1867. His wife separated from him and then lived in Paris. Von Hofstetten later married the seamstress Mathilde Schultz (* July 12, 1847).

For Karl Marx , he aroused indignation as plagiarist when Hofstetten in a speech at the General Assembly of the General Association of German Workers 1,867 points from the capital reproduced verbatim without the copyright to mention and to distort even the meaning of the points. Marx criticized this in the anonymously published article Plagiarism.

August Bebel reported how von Schweitzer wanted to deport von Hofstetten to Vienna at the beginning of 1868, where he was supposed to found a social democratic paper, but failed. On his return, von Schweitzer refused to allow his partner to return to the editorial office and since then has run the newspaper alone. Von Hofstetten gave a sharp indictment speech against von Schweitzer at the general assembly of the ADAV in 1869. He published a paper about the break with von Schweitzer. Hofstetten was a delegate in 1869 when the SDAP, which competed with the ADAV, was founded .

Von Hofstetten subsequently made a modest living as a reporter for several newspapers. Still, he was not completely forgotten, as it turned out at his funeral. Hundreds of workers and some leaders of the labor movement attended his funeral in the cemetery of the free religious community of Pappel-Allee . Socialist MPs were not among them. Wreaths came from various organizations. In view of the socialist law , the funeral was also a demonstration for the socialist labor movement.
