Johann (es) Bogerman (n) (* 1576 in Upleward in East Frisia; † September 11, 1637 in Franeker ) was a Reformed theologian of the 17th century.

Life

The son of a preacher studied from 1591 in Franeker, Heidelberg , Geneva , Zurich , Lausanne , Oxford and Cambridge , and became a preacher in Sneek in 1599 , in Enkhuizen in 1603 and in Leeuwarden in 1604 .

As an ardent follower of the Calvinist doctrine of predestination , he actively participated in the Arminian disputes through writings against Hugo Grotius and the Remonstrants . He was elected President of the Dordrecht Synod 1618-19 and worked from 1636 as a doctor and professor of theology at the University of Franeker . He worked on the » Statenbijbel «, the Dutch translation of the Bible from 1637.

Although not above suspicion of heterodoxy himself, he was filled with such zeal for orthodoxy and such heretic hatred that he published Théodore de Bèze's work on the right to punish heretics in a Dutch translation. It was not without reason that his management in Dordrecht was accused of partisanship and violence; his opponents even accused him of dirty greed and greed. He was no match for the remonstrants in learning.
