Johann Carl Julius Herzbruch (1841)

Johann Carl Julius Herzbruch , also Hertzbruch (born October 25, 1779 in Altona , † January 2, 1866 in Glückstadt ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran clergyman. From 1835 to 1855 he was general superintendent for Holstein under the Danish government .

Life

Johann Carl Julius Her (t) zbruch attended the Christianeum from 1797 to 1800 and then studied Protestant theology at the University of Kiel . After a time as private tutor, he passed his theological official examination in Glückstadt in 1815; he received the highest and extremely rare grade 1. Char. mvZ (1st character with full satisfaction). From 1817 he was stationed as a field chaplain with the Danish Observation Corps in France. In 1818 he was appointed castle and garrison preacher in Glückstadt. From 1834 he was connected to this as an examiner and 2nd clerical member of the Holstein consistory in Glückstadt. At the beginning of 1835 he also temporarily administered the office of penitentiary preacher.

In March 1835 the Danish King Frederick VI appointed him . as successor to Jacob Georg Christian Adler as senior consistorial councilor and general superintendent for the Duchy of Holstein, based in Glückstadt. He became widely known for his sermon at the opening of the constituent meeting of the Holstein Estates Assembly in Itzehoe on October 1, 1835, when he stood in for the sick Claus Harms at short notice . The sermon was also printed. Herzbruch makes a particular contribution to the school system. He was the superior of the Holstein school teacher seminar in Bad Segeberg and chairman of the examination committee for teachers.

In the Schleswig-Holstein survey , he largely held back. His son Theodor Herzbruch (1822-1891), however, fought as a volunteer in the Schleswig-Holstein Army . In 1854 he opened a publishing bookstore in Flensburg and soon became known as "one of the bravest champions of German culture in Schleswig-Holstein, which is surrounded by the sea" and an anti-Danish agitator. Soon after the restoration of Danish rule over Holstein, Herzbruch himself was retired on May 2, 1855 “at his request”. In the course of the reforms of the Lutheran church constitution in the Duchy of Holstein carried out by the Ministry for the Duchies of Holstein and Lauenburg under Ludvig Nicolaus von Scheele (1796–1874), the general superintendent became the Holstein monastery based on the Danish nomenclature ; Herzbruch's successor Wilhelm Heinrich Koopmann traded as a bishop instead of a general superintendent until the end of Danish rule in 1864.
