The BOB ABDeh 8/8 are three-piece meterspurige electrical low-floor -hinge multiple units of the Berner Oberland Railway (BOB) in Switzerland for mixed adhesive and gear operation , manufactured by Stadler Bussnang .

history

To replace the ABeh 4/4 I multiple units from 1965 and 1979 and the corresponding passenger coaches, the BOB ordered six three-part multiple units with adhesion and gear drive from Stadler Rail in summer 2014. The order was preceded by an in-depth evaluation with three tested variants:

variant Number of modules length Seats
Luggage compartment area
Standard composition
1st class 2nd class
« Long multiple unit » analogous to the four-part MGB comet 81 m 30th 180 8 m² Multiple unit + three-part GSW
« Medium multiple unit » analogous to the three-part MGB comet 24 120 8 m² Multiple unit + four-part GSW
«Multiple unit short » two-part 41 m 12   80 5 m² 2 multiple units + three-part GSW

The evaluation focused on the extreme fluctuations in demand in the high and low season of the Bernese Oberland Railway (BOB) , which is active in tourism . The rolling stock to be procured must be designed in such a way that the compositions can be easily adapted to demand. The space available in the “medium” variant best corresponded to the traffic demand in the off-peak times, so that a three-part multiple unit can be used as a single driver at these times. The BOB decided to buy six three-part multiple units and three further articulated control cars (GSW) ABt 431–433. The five existing low-floor articulated control cars ABt 421-425 from 2004 were adapted for operation with the ABDeh 8/8.

technology

The driver's cabs were taken over by the Adler and Flirt of the Zentralbahn and by the French-speaking Swiss meter gauge trains.

Each multiple unit consists of a four-axle intermediate car, on which an end car with a bogie is saddled on each side . All four bogies are essentially the same and have a drive for mixed adhesion and gear operation with pneumatically disengageable adhesion wheels, which was taken over from the gear GTW of MVR and TPC . The car bodies consist of a completely welded aluminum construction, the structure of which, together with the front sections that meet the more stringent crash standards, comes from the meter- gauge trains in western Switzerland . They are designed for a longitudinal compressive force of 800  kN . The floor height in the low-floor area is 400 mm, which results in optimal entry conditions at 35 cm high meter gauge barriers. The floor height above the bogies is 1100 mm. The automatic central buffer couplings from Schwab Verkehrstechnik allow trains to be strengthened and weakened easily in order to adapt them to fluctuations in demand. To adapt to the existing vehicles, the Schwab coupling heads can be exchanged for GF couplings .

The ABDeh 8/8 have five braking systems. A recuperation brake that acts on all wheels and acts until shortly before standstill is used as the service and inertia brake . It is supplemented by an adhesion block brake operated by compressed air and a spring-loaded brake in the adhesion regime , both of which also act on all axles . A band brake on each wheel set serves as a gear brake system 1 and the gear brake system 2, which consists of two spring-loaded band brakes per drive axle, serves as a safety and parking brake.

The power converters with integrated on-board power converters taken over from the meter-gauge trains in western Switzerland are mounted on the roof. With a continuous output of 2800  kW , operational use is hardly restricted even if a converter fails. The starting tractive effort of 400 kN allows a 250-tonne train to be moved with two articulated control cars. Ice scrapers on both single-arm pantographs guarantee good power consumption even with hoar frost .

The passenger compartments have a combined heating / ventilation system, the driver's cabs have air conditioning. Comfortable 1 + 2 seating is built into the first class. The destination display and the handicapped accessible toilet come from the Adler and Fink trains of the Zentralbahn.

business

Passenger information system of ABDeh 8/8

The ABDeh 8/8 were delivered between February and summer 2017. Five multiple units have been required together with the ABeh 4/4 II since December 2017 for the newly introduced half-hourly service on the Bernese Oberland Railway , a sixth serves as a reserve. Trains departing from Interlaken Ost are usually winged in Zweilütschinen . The front part of the train, consisting of an ABDeh 8/8 and a low-floor articulated control car ABt 421–425 / 431–433, continues to Lauterbrunnen . The rear section runs with an ABDeh 8/8 and one or two low-floor control cars to Grindelwald . When the number of passengers is low, the multiple units run without a trailer load.
