Johann Daniel Arcularius (born March 3, 1650 in Darmstadt ; † December 31, 1710 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German logician and Lutheran theologian.

Life

The son of the city preacher and definitor in Darmstadt Bartholomäus Arcularius (January 14, 1612 in Cleyburg / Nassau; † March 30, 1653 in Darmstadt) and his wife Marie Judith, daughter of the Frankfurt preacher and senior Johann Götze, came from a Protestant family of preachers. Initially he attended school and grammar school in Darmstadt. In 1666 he began studying at the University of Giessen and acquired the academic degree of Master of Science in Philosophy on March 19, 1670 . In 1672 he became the tutor of Princes Ludwig VII and Friedrich von Hessen-Darmstadt .

Through his relationship with the royal court, on September 6, 1676, he was given the full professorship of logic and metaphysics at the Giessen University. On June 26, 1684, he obtained a licentiate in theology and became an associate professor at the theological faculty. After taking part in the university's organizational tasks as the prorector of the Alma Mater, he went to Frankfurt am Main to succeed Philipp Jacob Spener as pastor of the Katharinenkirche and senior minister of preachers . In order to acquire the necessary qualifications, he received his doctorate in theology on September 9, 1686 in Giessen . In Frankfurt Arcularius was a moderate representative of Lutheran orthodoxy . His successor as a senior was Johann Georg Pritius .

On February 5, 1678, he married Elisabeth Dorothea , the daughter of Darmstadt's privy councilor and Chancellor Johann Peter Melchior . The marriage resulted in three sons and three daughters. From the children we know:

  • Lucretie Marie married the lawyer, Hessian Darmstadt councilor and court attorney Georg Andreas Geibel
  • Christine Barbara married her first marriage to the French pastor Friedrich Holzhausen , her second marriage to the Frankfurt theologian Jakob Seelig
  • Johann Peter († June 1703)
