Johann Darsow

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Darsow (* probably in Lübeck ; † 1434 ibid) was a councilor of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck. The name of his family is inextricably linked with the Darsow Madonna in Lübeck's Marienkirche, which he and other family members donated around 1420 .

Life

Darsow came from an advisable Lübeck merchant family who originally immigrated from the nearby Mecklenburg town of Dassow . His brothers Gerhard and Hermann were also councilors in Lübeck. Darsow was co-owner of the village of Stubben and the Kronsforde, Krummesse and Grönau estates near Lübeck . His first marriage was to Elisabeth, a daughter of Mayor Jakob Pleskow , and his second marriage to Walburg, daughter of Mayor Johann Nyebur .

In 1418 Darsow first donated a vicarie for the church of the Johanniskloster, which no longer exists today . In 1419 he and his nephews Bernhard, Gerhard and Hermann donated the Darsow altar in St. Mary's Church, from which a beautiful Madonna in the soft style made of Baumberger sandstone has been preserved from the central part of the triptych . It broke into thousands of individual pieces as a result of the air raid on Palm Sunday 1942 during the fire in St. Mary's Church, but restorers put it back together again. The original artist is not known and is therefore listed in art history under the emergency name Master of the Darsow Madonna .

He was a member of the circle society . He is listed several times as a documentary witness in Lübeck citizens' wills .
