Johann Diedrich Rädecker

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Diedrich Rädecker (born August 21, 1765 in Leese ; † June 17, 1848 in Lübeck ) was a German carpenter and instrument maker who had worked as a piano maker in Lübeck since 1800 .

Beginnings in Lübeck

The piano maker Johann Diedrich Rädecker was born in Leese near Stolzenau in the Electorate of Hanover in 1765 . Nothing is known about his training. Around 1800 Johann Diedrich came to Lübeck, where he married Magdalena Catharina Häsch in 1802. She was the widow of Johann Hinrich Winter , who had died a year earlier (1801). Johann Hinrich Winter was a piano maker and owned an apartment and workshop at Johannisstrasse 21. The local historian Eduard Hach claims that Johann Diedrich initially ran the business together with the piano maker Christian Hinrich Meyers , who founded the company together with Johann Hinrich's father Jürgen Hinrich Winter . However, the fact that Christian Hinrich Meyers died before 1798 speaks against this. The company was probably founded by Johann Conrad Winter , piano maker and father of Jürgen Hinrich Winter.

Johann Diedrich Rädecker family

Johann Diedrich and Magdalena Catharina had two sons: Johann Diedrich jr. (1802) and Carl Friedrich (1804). The eldest son, Johann Diedrich Rädecker jr., Learned in his father's workshop.

Magdalena Catharina died in 1805. Johan Diedrich sr. married Margaretha Catharina Trieloff for the second time in 1807. She was the widow of Daniel Peter Lunau, Schiffer zu Lübeck. Their first marriage resulted in three children, of whom Benjamin Heinrich Lunau (born 1797) was apprenticed to his stepfather Johann Diedrich.

The workshop was located at Johannisstrasse 21 until 1811 and then at Schüsselbuden 191 on the corner of Braunstrasse . In 1815 Johann Diedrich sold his property on Johannisstrasse to the carpenter Johann Christian Bernhard Florian.
Heinrich Christian Zietz writes in Views of the Free Hanseatic City of Lübeck and its surroundings (1822): "The factories (...) especially the Raedeckersche von Fortepianos deserve special mention because of their excellent work."

Rädecker & Lunau company

Johann Diedrich Rädecker jr. married Maria Dorothea Biskamp in 1829. They had three daughters and a son. Benjamin Heinrich Lunau married Wilhelmine Catharina Fehling two years earlier (1827). They had seven children. The company Rädecker & Lunau was founded in 1831/1832 (Althöfer 2000). Initially, Johann Diedrich Rädecker jr. one of the two Compagnons.
However, he died early in 1835. Benjamin Heinrich Lunau and Johann Diedrich sr., Who now joined the company as the successor to his late son, continued to run the company Rädecker & Lunau. In 1848 Johann Diedrich Rädecker sr. Also died. In the Lübeck address book 1852 the company name Rädecker & Lunau is still listed, but the Lübeck address book 1854 already mentions the piano factory of Benjamin Heinrich Lunau.

The instruments made by Rädecker & Lunau are collectors' items today. Carey Beebe Harpsichords in Australia has extensively and successfully restored a piano by Rädecker & Lunau from 1830. The instrument is owned by the Hong Kong University Music Department. A detailed report is available on his website. Table pianos from Rädecker & Lunau can be found in the following locations ( see: Literature):

  • Music Museum in Stockholm
  • Museu da Música in Lisbon (three instruments by Rädecker & Lunau, also one by Carl Rädecker, Hamburg)
  • Museum of Arts and Crafts in Hamburg ( Andreas E. Beurmann Collection )
  • Maihaugen Museum, Norway (two instruments)
  • The Schubert Club, St. Paul (MN), USA
  • Colt Clavier Collection, Bethersden (Kent), UK
  • Gothenburg (private property)

Operation BH Lunau

Benjamin Heinrich Lunau continued the business under his own name, probably without employees. He continued to build table pianos . The Viadrina district museum in Frankfurt (Oder) owns a square piano by BH Lunau from 1870. It is rather late in dating because square pianos were already out of fashion at the time. Benjamin Heinrich had certainly switched to building upright pianos earlier.

In the last few years Benjamin Heinrich was no longer active as a piano maker. In the Lübeck address book in 1873 he is listed as a businessman. Benjamin Heinrich Lunau died in 1883. This ended a 140-year tradition in piano making that began around 1740 with Johann Conrad Winter.

Family affair

Around 1810 Johann Diedrich Rädecker sr. an extramarital relationship with Sophia Maria Hansing, the daughter of his sister Anne Sophia Engel Rädecker. Their son was Heinrich Wilhelm Rädecker. He was a carpenter and came to Amsterdam around 1850 . Heinrich Wilhelm is the progenitor of all Rädecker in the Netherlands . He had three sons, all of whom worked as wood carvers, stone masons, joiners and joiners. In the extended family there are many painters and sculptors, including the artist Michael Raedecker (with ae , for the international area) and the sculptor John Rädecker . The sculptures on the national monument in Amsterdam were made by him.

Remarks

  1. Also: Diederich, Diderich, Dietrich. The baptismal register has a gap between 1764 and 1780, but in 1780 Johann Diedrich was confirmed in Leese ('vere bene'); the date of birth is from this register. Eduard Hach (in Crafts - Musicians and Instrument Makers , Archives of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck, around 1900) names Leese as the place of birth.
  2. ^ The Lübeck address book 1798 does not have a Raider, four years later he married there.
  3. Johann Diedrich Rädecker and Magdalena Catharina Häsch (also Haesche) married on March 30, 1802, cf. Marriage book St. Marienkirche Lübeck. Magdalena Catharina Häsch was born on April 4, 1780, daughter of Johann Nicolaus Häsch, cf. Baptismal register St. Marienkirche Lübeck.

  5. Three comments:
    • In the Lübeck address book 1798 only the widow of Christian Hinrich Meyers is mentioned, Christian Hinrich died earlier. Johann Diedrich is said to have continued the business alone in 1802.
    • Jürgen Hinrich Winter is the son of the piano maker Johann Conrad Winter. It is likely that the father founded the business and the son continued the business together with Christian Hinrich Meyers.
    • Johann Diedrich was probably already employed by Johann Hinrich Winter a few years before his marriage to Magdalena Catharina Häsch, but at least not before 1798.
