Johann Elias Ridinger (born February 15, 1698 in Ulm , † April 10, 1767 in Augsburg ) was a German animal painter , engraver , etcher and publisher.

Life

As the son of a father who was gifted in drawing, Ridinger was taught by Christoph Rasch (also Resch ) in Ulm and Johann Falch (also Falk ) in Augsburg and then continued his education in Regensburg , where his preference for hunting to study game at the count's court Metternich led them . After 1717 he undertook further studies in the imperial city academy of Georg Philipp Rugendas . He later founded his own art publishing house in Augsburg, in which most of his works were published. In 1759 he became director of the art academy . Ridinger died in Augsburg on April 10, 1767. His work was continued by his sons Martin Elias (1730–1780) and Johann Jakob (1735–1784). The publishing house was later taken over by Martin Engelbrechtschen Kunsthandlung and in 1827 by Johann Alois Schlosser .

His etched sheets, which amount to about 1,600 pieces, depict the animals in characteristic moments of life and scenic surroundings. Old prints of the sheets are rare. An edition as "Galerie Ridingerscher Tier- und Jagdstücke" was started in Augsburg in 1817. His drawings, executed with precision and taste, are very numerous.
