Johann Ernst Greding (theologian)

Johann Ernst Greding (born June 30, 1676 in Weimar ; † April 13, 1748 in Altheim , Hesse ) was a German Protestant pastor and hymn poet .

Greding was the son of a surgeon and came to Hanau soon after completing his theology studies in 1700 as the rector of the local evangelical school. After he had held this arduous position for 18 years, he was given the position of preacher in Altheim near Darmstadt in 1718 , where he died in 1748 at the age of 71.

Among his writings, which mostly consist of funeral speeches ( parentations ), the following are worth mentioning:

  • Rudimenta poetica , Hanover 1701
  • Poetic savings port, consisting of all kinds of well-flowing and pure German greetings, thanks, weddings, weddings, births, names, honorary doctorates, funeral and funeral sermons , Frankfurt am Main 1712
  • Written instructions on how a Christian should throw all his worries on the Lord , Hanau 1716
