Johann Friedrich Funk (II.) (Born October 26, 1745 in Bern , † December 4, 1811 in Bern; citizen of Nidau ) was a Swiss sculptor .

Life

He completed his apprenticeship with his father of the same name, Johann Friedrich Funk . From 1766 to 1771 he studied in Paris at the Académie Royale and also worked as a drawing teacher. An important sculptural work of this time was the statue of the Grand Condé in the stairwell of the Paris War School.

In 1775 he returned to Bern and took over his father's workshop. The best income brought him mirror, sculpture and gilding work. In 1777, Funk created a bust of Albrecht von Haller and a tomb for the Basel mayor Isaak Hagenbach in the cloister of the Basel minster . Others followed in 1779 for Abraham Samuel Lombach in the Bümpliz Church and in 1782 for the mathematician and physicist Daniel Bernoulli ( Church of St. Peter in Basel). The neo-classical Schultheissen throne was created for the Bern town hall in 1785. He was the landowner of the Steinhölzli am Gurten in Köniz . A street in Köniz was named after him in the 20th century.

The most important and most extensive collection of works by Johann Friedrich Funk (II.) Is now in Jegenstorf Castle .

The portrait opposite is by Johann Wäber (1751–1793), who later became the expedition painter Captain Cooks. He spent his youth in the house of Mathäus Funk , the sitter's uncle.

Funk was married twice: from 1775 to Maria Elisabeth Kurz, from 1805 to Maria Dällenbach.
