Johann Friedrich Will

Johann Georg Friedrich Will (born June 26, 1815 in Bayreuth ; † November 20, 1868 in Erlangen ) was a German physician, scientist and zoologist .

Life

Johann Georg Friedrich Will attended high school in Bayreuth and then studied medicine and natural sciences at the universities in Munich, Erlangen and Würzburg.

In 1839 he was promoted to Dr. of medicine, surgery and obstetrics PhD , undertook a study tour of the Czech lands and then accompanied the director of the Zoological Institute in Erlangen Rudolf Wagner on a trip through Switzerland and northern Italy.

Johann Friedrich Will was promoted to Dr. phil. doctorate and on Wagner's recommendation assistant at the natural history cabinet in Erlangen. In 1841 he completed his habilitation in Erlangen and took over the management of zootomic exercises.

In the time after that he stayed for a long time in Trieste to research marine animals until 1843 with a Bavarian state grant and a Göttingen Blumenbachianum grant and then published the results of his research in several papers.

In 1845 he was appointed associate professor and gave lectures on zoology, comparative anatomy, veterinary medicine, encyclopedia of medicine and anthropology. As the successor to Carl Theodor von Siebold , he was appointed director of the zoological cabinet in 1846 and on November 1, 1848 appointed full professor of zoology, comparative anatomy and veterinary science. Will was the first professor in Erlangen who was allowed to write the usual program for entering the academic senate in German and to give a speech in German.

He was married to his wife Adelheid, née Mayer, the daughter of a lawyer. The couple had four sons and four daughters.

Johann Georg Friedrich Will was elected a member ( matriculation number 1533 ) of the Leopoldina on October 15, 1843 with the academic surname Eustachius II .
