Johann Georg Hörner

Johann Georg Hörner (born June 9, 1785 in Seckenheim ; † November 3, 1873 ) was a German mayor, social reformer and revolutionary.

Life

Hörner came from a long-established, wealthy farming family. As early as 1819 he was a member of the Seckenheim election committee to determine who was eligible to vote in the Second Chamber in Karlsruhe. From 1832 until his impeachment in 1849, he was repeatedly elected mayor by the community of Seckenheim (which has been part of Mannheim since 1930 ). He energetically took advantage of the new legal possibilities in relation to the Karlsruhe government, the new and for the time in Germany remarkable municipal code in Baden of 1831, in order to successfully implement numerous social projects in the municipality. His contacts and friendly relationships with the Mannheim lawyers Friedrich Hecker , Gustav von Struve and Johann Georg Alexander Freiherr von Soiron deepened in connection with the Baden Revolution of 1848/49.

Song poem "The Mayor of Seckenheim"

Hörner was an avid advocate of liberalism, he was a co-founder of the Democratic Association, which strived for a democratic constitution. His commitment to manipulating the election against the candidate Johann Adam von Itzstein was praised by a song poem by Hoffmann von Fallersleben as part of the “Ten Zeitlieder”, in which the German national anthem was also published. After Prussian troops had put a bloody end to the short-term democratic government in Karlsruhe, Mayor Hörner was "horrified from his office in 1849 because of his official conduct". He had to pay a substantial fine of 3857 guilders from his property. The Grand Duke Leopold , who was reinstated in office , had himself reimbursed for all costs that the town had incurred in connection with the revolution.
