Ullmann began his service in 1717 as a senior driver, surveyor and tester for the administrative authority in Wunsiedel in the so-called Sechsämterland in what is now the district of Wunsiedel in the Fichtel Mountains .

As an outstanding mining specialist, his records from 1723 to 1760 were trend-setting for the Upper Franconian mining industry. As a miner in the Wunsiedeler Bergamt , he improved the drainage of the pits, drew cracks in the mines and described the hard life of the miners who went about their arduous work in small groups. In addition to the mining office in Wunsiedel, he also headed the mining office in Goldkronach .

He became known for his particularly detailed maps, especially the “six offices” cards, which are valuable objects of historical research because of their vignettes.

He died in 1765 as a princely mining inspector for the margraviate of Brandenburg-Bayreuth.
