Johann Gottfried Krause (born June 29, 1685 in Greußen ; † September 25, 1746 ) was a German theologian and hymn poet .

Life

Johann Gottfried Krause was born on June 29, 1685 in Greußen as the son of a school principal there. At the age of 17 he moved into the Augusteum in Weißenfels . In 1704 he finally moved to the University of Leipzig and three years later moved to the University of Jena . After he had completed his studies, he initially worked as a private tutor , then from 1717 as a deacon in Weißenfels. He received a call as superintendent and first pastor in Dahme / Mark in 1721. As such he was later appointed to the Sachsen-Querfurt church council . In 1746 he was appointed superintendent in Lübben , but before he could take up this position, he died of a stroke on September 25 at the age of 61 .

The third edition of Bad Langensalza's hymn book from 1719 contains seven sacred songs by Krause. In 1716 he published a hymn book in Langensalza. He also worked on a hymn book for Dahma , which was completed shortly before his death. Johann Gottlieb Horwein brought to Wittenberg in 1764 out the second edition of the hymnbook. Here, too, there are some of Krause's songs; they were also included in later congregational hymn books.
