Johann Gottfried Steinmeyer
Johann Gottfried Steinmeyer (* around 1780 in Mühlhausen ; † May 6, 1851 in Berlin ) was one of the leading architects in the construction of the residential town of Putbus . The Granitz hunting lodge on Rügen is considered to be his most important creation .
life and work
As the son of the Berlin master mason Carl Christoph Steinmeyer, Johann Gottfried Steinmeyer grew up in Berlin, where he learned to be a carpenter. He was trained as an architect at the Berlin Building Academy and also worked as a building contractor in Berlin. Since his estate was almost completely lost, little is known about his life and origin. A close friendship connected him with Karl Friedrich Schinkel , whom he accompanied on his first trip to Italy from 1803-1805. Steinmeyer worked as an architect in Putbus between 1815 and 1850. Prince Wilhelm Malte zu Putbus , who was in charge of the redesign and expansion of Putbus from 1800, awarded numerous orders to the Berlin architect.
