Johann Gottlieb Stephanie the Elder J. (born February 19, 1741 in Breslau ; † January 23, 1800 in Vienna ) was an Austrian actor, playwright and opera librettist .

To distinguish him from his brother Christian Gottlob Stephanie “the elder”, he is usually referred to as “the younger”.

Life

Stephanie the Younger attended the Elisabethinum grammar school in Breslau. Instead of starting his law studies in Halle as planned, he entered Prussian service in 1757 and took part in the Seven Years War . In 1760 he was taken prisoner in Austria. A few months later he joined an imperial infantry regiment and only left the army after the peace treaty in 1763. He then spent some time in the rank of lieutenant as a recruiter in Augsburg before finally moving to Vienna. There he devoted himself entirely to his career as an actor and joined the ensemble of the German-speaking stage in 1769. Stephanie the Younger was also extremely productive as a playwriter.

His niece was the theater actress Wilhelmine Korn , b. Stephanie.
