Johann Gustav Gallois (born October 15, 1815 in Hamburg ; † April 8, 1872 there ) was a German lawyer , historian and politician .

Life

Johann Gustav Gallois was a son of Jacob Gallois (1793–1872), who taught the French language as a teacher at the Johanneum in Hamburg . His mother was Marie Emilie Rodatz, daughter of the organist Amandus Eberhard Rodatz . He was a student at the Johanneum and grammar school and was already active as a grammar school student in the city ​​library and as a private tutor. On May 6, 1835, Gallois was enrolled at Heidelberg University to study law . After a year he moved to the University of Göttingen and was awarded a Dr. jur. PhD. Gallois returned to Hamburg and was enrolled as a lawyer on May 18, 1838 . In this capacity, he took part in large criminal trials several times, for example in 1854 as the defender of the robbery murderer Wilhelm Timm.

In January 1846 Gallois founded the “Association of Non-Land Owners”, which he described as Hamburg's first political association. Anyone from Hamburg who was neither a landowner nor an official could become a member. In contrast to the hereditary people , this group was largely excluded from the public bodies.

At the time of the revolution of 1848 Gallois was one of the radical supporters of democracy . He was temporarily arrested at the so-called tumult meeting in the Tonhalle on August 7, 1848, together with Messrs. Trittau, Wilhelm Marr and Löwe. In the autumn of 1848 Gallois was elected to the Hamburg Constituent Assembly, where he was on the left and was involved in drafting a new constitution. From 1859 to 1861 Gallois was a member of the Hamburg parliament as a member.

Gallois lived in constant financial need and had to declare himself insolvent in 1861. Then he was mainly active as a writer and journalist, where he participated in the political part of the Hamburg Correspondent .

Gallois dealt with the history of Hamburg. Among other things, he wrote a book about the Hanseatic League and published the history of the city of Hamburg and the Hamburg Chronicle in several volumes .

Johann Gustav Gallois was married to Marie Karoline, née Puricelli from Hamburg.

In the Ohlsdorf cemetery , in the area of ​​the Althamburg Memorial Cemetery near the main entrance to the cemetery, the collective grave of Advokaten commemorates Johann Gustav Gallois , among others .
