Johann Höhne (* 1802 in Ellguth-Sternalitz , Prussian Silesia , † February 3, 1886 in Währing near Vienna ) was an Austrian builder and architect of German origin.

Life

Nothing is known about the early years and the education of Johann Höhne, who came from Silesia. In 1835 he married Antonia Wettl from Eisenstadt in Pressburg . Since this year it has been recorded in the Vienna suburb of Währing. It is not known where and when he acquired the master builder license.

He submitted an offer to the Obersthofmeisteramt for the expansion of the imperial crypt and the new facade of the Capuchin Church , which was accepted. This order from the imperial family is the only proven Höhne building project in the city of Vienna . He mainly worked in his home community of Währing, for which he also sat on the local council from 1840 to 1842 . Here he lived as a respected builder and property owner .

Höhne had six daughters. He died at the age of 84 and was buried at the Gersthofer cemetery . In Gersthof , Höhnegasse was named after him in 1892 .

Johann Höhne mostly used a neoclassical language of form, but adapted the design of his buildings with great sensitivity to the task assigned to him. So he took what already existed into account by choosing classic design elements for the expansion of the imperial crypt that referred to the neighboring classicist architecture, while for the tower of the Gertrudskirche in Währing he chose baroque forms. He designed the facades of the Capuchin monastery extremely simply, as it seemed appropriate for a building of this mendicant order. His residential buildings, on the other hand, were within the framework of the functional architecture of his time.
