from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Heinrich August Breul also Heinrich August Breul, Breull, Breil, Breuel or Breyl (born August 30, 1734 in Henneberg / Thuringia ; † August 5, 1783 in Erlangen ) was a German composer , violinist , organist and music director .

Live and act

Johann Heinrich August Breul was the son of the conductor , musician and teacher Johann Michael Breul (1706–1772). After graduating from high school in Bayreuth , he studied theology in Erlangen from 1753 . In 1762 he became a violinist in the Bayreuth court orchestra , which moved to Ansbach with the court in 1769 following the merger of the principalities of Brandenburg-Bayreuth and Ansbach . Due to his special musical virtuosity, he was appointed city organist in Erlangen ( Neustädter Kirche ) as successor to Johann Balthasar Kehl in June 1774 at the instigation of Margrave Karl-Alexander von Brandenburg-Ansbach-Bayreuth in addition to his work in the court orchestra .

In Erlangen, he also initiated and conducted the city's first subscription concerts as music director, the so-called Friday or winter concerts . On the occasion of this, in 1776 he founded the Collegium musicum , a student orchestra, in which a little later citizens of Erlangen also took part. He is also an important representative of the so-called Franconian Liederschule, which enjoyed great popularity in this region, especially between 1770 and 1885. As music director, composing for a wide variety of occasions was one of his tasks, but only a few of his works have survived.
