Johann Heinrich Tanner

Johann Heinrich Tanner (* 6. December 1799 in Herisau ; † 30th May 1875 ibid ; heimatberechtigt ) was a Swiss politician and businessman from the canton of Appenzell Outer Rhodes .

biography

Johann Heinrich Tanner was the son of Bartholome Tanner, a businessman and Anna Ramsauer. In 1830 Tanner married Albertina Meyer, daughter of Laurenz Meyer, owner of the finish in Herisau.

After the early death of his father, Tanner gave up his ambitions to study medicine . From 1815 he worked in his mother's specialty shop . From 1816 on he worked for the Herisau textile trading company Müller & Cie. active. From 1819 to 1826 he worked in the Genoa branch as a clerk and accountant . In 1826 he succeeded his brother Tanner in the Paris branch of the Herisau textile trade Gebr Schiess . In 1827 he became a partner in his brother Bartholome Tanner's textile export company, which also operated in Herisau and Paris. In the following years, he expanded his company into a leading textile exporter from Eastern Switzerland .

Tanner also served as Ausserrhoder council clerk from 1831 to 1839. From 1832 to 1850 he was a member of the two-time district administrator. Between 1839 and 1850 he was a member of the Governing Council , first as a state governor, from 1842 Landammann . As Landammann, he presided over the state school and military commissions. Tanner was initially a politician against his will, but conscientiously took over the offices assigned to him. In 1836 Tanner co-founded the Herisau casino company. He was a member of the board of directors of the Herisau savings bank and negotiator in the negotiations to replace the post office shelf in 1848. From 1839 to 1843 he was employed as a delegate to the daily articles of association . As a moderately liberal candidate, he ran for the National Council elections in 1851 and took a seat in the large chamber until 1854 . Three years later, he did not stand for re-election , but remained politically active. From 1853 to 1855, Tanner was a member of the railway commission that campaigned for a route between St. Gallen and Herisau. In 1858/59 he was vice-president of the cantonal revision commission, from 1859 to 1864 he was vice-president of the higher court .
