John II (Brabant)
Johann II the Peacemaker (born September 27, 1275 , † October 27, 1312 in Tervuren ) was Duke of Brabant and Limburg from 1294 to 1312. He was the son of Duke Johann I and Margaret of Flanders .
In 1277 he was betrothed to Margarete , a younger daughter of the English King Edward I and his wife Eleanor of Castile . He married her on July 9, 1290 at Westminster Abbey . He followed his father as Duke in 1294 and faced uprisings, which he mastered with the help of his uncle Gottfried von Aerschot . He allied himself with the King of England, Guido of Flanders and other nobles against Philip IV of France , but the attack was delayed until the alliance dissolved itself in 1300. He later fought against King Albrecht von Habsburg , who wanted to restore his authority in the region, and eventually had to submit. In 1303 he fought against John II of Holland to expand his territory towards the mouth of the Scheldt , but failed here too.
On his deathbed, he signed the Kortenberg Charter , which became a Brabant constitution.
progeny
Johann II had several children with his wife Margarete, including Johann III. (1300–1355) who became his heir.
In addition, Johann II had a number of illegitimate children, including Johann Cordeken, who received the rule of Glymes in Brabant around 1312 and thus founded the Glymes family .
