Johann IX. from Haugwitz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann IX. von Haugwitz (born August 29, 1524 in Thalheim / Erzgeb. , † May 21, 1595 in Mügeln ) was bishop of Meissen from 1555 to 1559 and 1581, respectively .

Johann IX. came from the von Haugwitz family , who held several high spiritual offices. In 1555, Elector August of Saxony made his appointment as Bishop of Meißen dependent on the acceptance of the Reformation and the exchange of the office of Stolpen for the office of Mühlberg . From 1555 to 1558 Johann von Haugwitz led the so-called Saukrieg against Hans von Carlowitz , which was the last feud on Electoral Saxon soil. Johann lost this feud and fled to Prague. After he had submitted to the mediating electors on January 18, 1559, he was able to return to the diocese of Meißen.

Johann von Haugwitz was the last bishop of the diocese of Meissen, which became Protestant as a result of the Reformation . In 1559 he appointed Johann Leisentrit administrator of the remaining Catholic areas. Johann signed the concord formula of 1577 and the concord book of 1580. On October 20, 1581, the bishop resigned his office due to a dispute over Bautzen and converted to the Protestant faith himself. He moved to Mügeln and in 1582 married his considerably younger niece Agnes (* 1561; † October 10, 1631 in Dresden), who after his death married Hans Georg von Wehse , the councilor and later bailiff of Stolpen . Agnes von Haugwitz was the heiress of the episcopal property. In her second marriage, she gave birth to four daughters. The tomb of Johann IX. is located in the town church of Mügeln .
